This is the sixth contribution made by the Verenia Santa Águeda Association of Brenes to support the cancer research carried out at the Seville-based hospital.

The Foundation for the Management of Health Research in Seville (FISEVI), the organisation responsible for managing research and innovation at Virgen Macarena University Hospital, has received a €10,000 donation from the Verenia Santa Águeda Association of Brenes to support the hospital’s oncology research. This is the sixth contribution made by the non-profit association in support of these research projects.

The collaboration between the Verenia Santa Águeda Association and Virgen Macarena University Hospital, through FISEVI, began in 2018 with the association’s first donation to cancer research. Since then, the organisation has maintained a strong commitment to the hospital’s Medical Oncology Research Unit, contributing to a range of research projects focused on the fight against cancer.

The Medical Oncology Research Unit at Virgen Macarena University Hospital brings together a multidisciplinary team of professionals that has been conducting research for more than a decade, with a particular focus on cancer immunology and immunotherapy.

The Department of Medical Oncology carries out extensive research across a wide range of tumour types, including breast cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, skin cancers, genitourinary, germ cell, cancers of unknown primary origin, brain tumours, rare tumours, sarcomas, gastrointestinal, endocrine and neuroendocrine tumours, as well as thoracic, gynaecological, and head and neck cancers.

The Department currently has 16 active research lines. “Any support for research is greatly appreciated in a field such as ours, where we are involved in so many clinical trials, research projects and scientific studies,” said Luis de la Cruz, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology.

The oncologist also expressed his gratitude for this latest contribution: “The Verenia Santa Águeda Association’s commitment to public healthcare is exemplary. For a small organisation like this, raising such a significant amount of money requires tremendous effort. We can only express our sincere thanks and continue advancing cancer research with the same dedication and commitment they inspire in us.”

The donation received by FISEVI will help further support the research activity carried out at Virgen Macarena University Hospital. The hospital’s Department of Medical Oncology currently has more than 230 active clinical trials underway, reinforcing its position as a leading centre for research and innovation aimed at improving cancer care.
