Biomedicine Institute of Seville

The Biomedicine Institute of Seville (IBiS) is a multidisciplinary centre that carries out key research into the causes and mechanisms of the most prevalent conditions in the population and the development of new methods of diagnosing and treating them.

The IBiS is home to 42 consolidated groups and 41 affiliated groups led by research staff from:

  • The University of Seville.
  • The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
  • The Virgen del Rocío, Virgen Macarena and Virgen de Valme University Hospitals, working in five areas:
    • Infectious and immune system diseases.
    • Neurosciences.
    • Onco-hematology and genetics.
    • Cardiovascular and Respiratory Disorders/Other Systemic Disorders.
    • Liver, Digestive and Inflammatory Diseases.

The building, covering some 8,200 m2, was the first research institute of the Andalusian Public Health System (APHS). It currently houses 67 research laboratories and devotes over 50% of its space to various central research support services, which employ around 30 technicians.

The centre is institutionally dependent on the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Regional Government of Andalusia; the Andalusian Health Service (SAS); the Ministry of University, Research and Innovation; the University of Seville and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and is managed by the Foundation for Health Research Management in Seville (FISEVI) according to the BOE 306 Agreement of 22 December 2022.

It currently houses 67 research laboratories and devotes over 50% of its space to various central research support services, which employ around 30 technicians.
