The Joint Action ‘Enhancing digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe to improve prevention and care’ (eCAN Plus) is a flagship EU project in digital oncology and cross-border health data exchange. Its goal is to make the benefits of digital health accessible to all citizens, patients and healthcare professionals.
The initiative involves 81 organisations from 23 European countries, one of them is Fundación para la Gestión de la Investigación en Salud de Sevilla (FISEVI). Together, they seek to address the increasing incidence of cancer, expected to rise by 20% by 2040. As part of this effort and building on the eCAN Joint Action’s experience (2022-2024), this project involves testing and piloting the safe and secure integration of digital tools and health data in order to improve the use and re-use of health data. The growing adoption of telemedicine tools and the European Health Data Space’s legal framework provide the foundation for implementing these mechanisms.
Through comprehensive mapping of current scenarios, training programmes, use cases, and pilots, eCAN Plus also intends to strengthen collaboration among cancer centres and enhance the digital skills of healthcare professionals. Moreover, by gathering and sharing knowledge from participating countries, eCAN Plus expects to develop recommendations and highlight best practices along the cancer care pathway, thereby improving patients’ access to effective healthcare.
Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena works in this project
The hospital centre in Seville actively participates in the project through Dr David Vicente Baz, Head of the Medical Oncology Section and Director of the Andalusian Cancer Strategy, who acts as the principal investigator.
At this institution, two of the project’s three pilot studies will be conducted, in collaboration with a further 16 centres across 12 European countries.
The first pilot will analyse the use of telemedicine by patients and healthcare professionals in the follow-up and treatment of cancer survivors within a dedicated survivorship programme.
The second pilot will evaluate the use of telemedicine tools for the monitoring and management of toxicity associated with systemic therapies and/or radiotherapy in oncology patients.
Both pilots are currently in the protocol review and finalisation phase. Within the next few weeks, the protocols will be completed and submitted, together with the rest of the documentation, for approval by the Ethics Committees of each participating centre.
Approximately 15 patients are expected to be recruited for each of the pilot studies at our hospital, thereby directly contributing to the generation of evidence on the effectiveness and applicability of digital health in oncology care.
